Caribbean Fried Beef Empanadas
Inspired by Tropical Vibes Ray & Mike in Puerto Banús, these Caribbean-style fried beef empanadas deliver an intoxicating crunch with every bite. Wrapped in a whisper-thin pastry that bubbles into delicate, shatteringly crisp blisters, the interior yields a rich picadillo laced with ground allspice, garlic, bell pepper, and scotch bonnet warmth. Served fresh from the oil alongside bright dipping sauces, they are the consummate bistro starter—crisp, deeply savory, and impossible to resist.
The Bistro Recipe
Golden, blistered Caribbean fried beef empanadas filled with savory allspice-spiced picadillo sealed in shatteringly crisp, paper-thin pastry.
- 1 lb lean ground beef (85/15)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 piece small yellow onion, finely diced
- 0.5 piece green bell pepper, finely minced
- 3 cloves garlic, finely grated
- 1 tbsp double-concentrated tomato paste
- 1 tsp ground Jamaican allspice
- 1 tsp Scotch bonnet pepper sauce
- Flaky sea salt & freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
- 8 piece empanada pastry rounds (for frying, 5-inch diameter)
- 2 cup neutral high-heat oil (sunflower or canola)
-
1Cook Sofrito
Warm oil in a skillet over medium heat; sweat diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic until translucent and fragrant.
-
2Brown Beef & Season
Add beef, mincing finely while browning. Stir in tomato paste, allspice, hot sauce, salt, and pepper; simmer dry.
-
3Cool Picadillo
Spread filling on a wide plate and chill 15 minutes. Cool filling prevents pastry from softening or bursting.
-
4Fill & Crimp
Spoon 2 tablespoons filling into each disc, fold half-moon, and press edges securely with a fork to seal[cite: 6].
-
5Flash-Fry
Fry in 365°F (185°C) oil for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown and blistered with air pockets[cite: 6].
-
6Drain & Serve
Transfer to wire rack to maintain crispness; arrange immediately on platters with garlic mojo and hot chili relish[cite: 6].
Steamed gently in rich coconut milk infused with fresh thyme leaves, scallions, and a hint of allspice, each long grain remains tender, distinct, and delicately luscious.
